File names

These rules apply to file and folder names in HCP Anywhere:

  • File and folder names cannot be blank.
  • These characters are not allowed:
    • Asterisk ( * )
    • Colon ( : )
    • Less-than symbol ( < )
    • Greater-than symbol ( > )
    • Question mark ( ? )
    • Forward slash ( / )
    • Backslash ( \ )
    • Vertical bar ( | )
    • Double quotation mark ( " )

    Note

    In the User Portal, you cannot create a folder or upload a file that has a name that contains one of these characters.

    If you store such a file or folder in the User Portal folder on your computer, the desktop application does not synchronize that file or folder. For information on viewing a list of files that the desktop application could not synchronize, see Viewing the sync status of your files.

  • Individual file names and individual folder names cannot exceed 255 characters.
  • File paths cannot exceed 1,023 characters. For more information on how this limit affects file synchronization for the desktop application, see Path length restrictions and the desktop client.
  • These file and folder names are not allowed:
    • . (a single period)
    • .. (two periods)
    • CON
    • PRN
    • AUX
    • NUL
    • COM1
    • COM2
    • COM3
    • COM4
    • COM5
    • COM6
    • COM7
    • COM8
    • COM9
    • LPT1
    • LPT2
    • LPT3
    • LPT4
    • LPT5
    • LPT6
    • LPT7
    • LPT8
    • LPT9
