Opening a Microsoft Office for the web or PDF file

If Microsoft Office integration is configured, you can open Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files as well as PDF files. Hovering over an Office or PDF file causes an icon () to appear, indicating that the file can be opened. If you have modification rights, the file is opened in edit mode. Otherwise, the file opens for viewing only. PDF files always open for viewing only.

Microsoft Office integration supports co-authoring. If more than one person opens the same Word (in .docx format), Excel (in .xlsx format), or PowerPoint (in .pptx format) file, they can edit it simultaneously.

Password-protected files can't be opened.

Procedure

  1. In the row of a file, click the overflow icon ().
  2. In the menu, click Open in Microsoft Office.

Result

The first time that you open a Microsoft Office or PDF file after this feature is configured, you are notified that the feature is enabled and given the opportunity to change the behavior from opening the file to downloading the file.

After the initial notification, clicking on a Microsoft Office or PDF file triggers the configured action unless the configuration is changed again.
